“I am weary from my groaning; with my tears I dampen my bed and drench my couch every night. My eyes are swollen from grief; they grow old because of all my enemies.” Psalm 8:6
We see in this passage that David is depressed, grieving, and mourning. He is tired because his enemies have been chasing him down and trying to kill him. He is feeling discouraged and downcast.
What is something that has been making you tired or weary lately? What is something that perhaps has been making you feel depressed, sorrow, or grief in this season?
David shows us what it’s like to be human. He shows us what it’s like to grieve and be deeply saddened. He shows us that as humans, depression and discouragement can be real emotions that we experience in times of hardship, trials, darkness, despair, grief, and sadness.
If you are feeling this way, I want you to know that your feelings are valid and I am sorry you are going through a tough time. God cares about what you care about and it’s His desire to raise you up from the pit and strengthen you! There is freedom, breakthrough, and salvation available in Him.
David in this passage shows us what it’s like to be human and to be so discouraged that you can’t stop weeping, but in the midst of His despair He also shows us what we should do about it.
The passage right before he is crying out to God about his groaning and endless tears says, “ Turn Lord! Rescue me; save me because of your faithful love.”
David leans on God in his time of sadness and asks Him to rescue him in the place of prayer and lamenting. He recognizes that he is tired and weary but he acknowledges that God is his stronghold and refuge. He turns to God for help and salvation!
After crying out to God he says, “Depart from me, all evildoers, for the Lord has heard this sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea for help; the Lord accepts my prayer.”
Now we see David taking authority and commanding the evildoers to flee. He has CONFIDENCE and FAITH that as He released His cares and concerns to the Lord, the Lord heard him and heard his cries. After praying to God he now has full faith that God is going to deliver him from his situation and that God has heard and accepted his prayers.
As David PRAYED and released his cares and concerns to the Lord, it allowed His FAITH to increase that God was going to do something about his current situation and bring him protection, justice and deliverance!
In times of despair and sorrow, it’s important to turn to God and lean on Him when we need Him the most. Let’s always remember to do the things David did when he was feeling depressed.
1.) Turn to prayer and dependency on God.
2.) Pray to God and ask Him for help.
3.) Be vulnerable with God and talk to Him about how you are feeling.
4.) Choose to believe that God has heard your prayers and shift your mindset.
5.) Take authority and command the evildoers to flee.
6.) Choose to believe and have faith that God has accepted your prayers and will answer them.
Say this prayer if you are feeling depressed, discouraged, or downcast:
“Lord, I pray that You would release me from this stage of depression. I pray for Your joy that is my strength. I ask that You would fill me with Your Presence today and help me turn to You and trust in You in my time of need. Rescue me and save me because of Your faithful love. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!
